What is an ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis)

Ingrown toenail or onychocryptosis commonly occurs if a nail edge curves onto itself pressing into the nailbed or if the nail plate (or piece of nail called a “nail spike”) embeds into the skinfold edge (sulcus). It can cause significant pain when walking, wearing shoes or if pressure is applied to the nail plate. The painful region can be red, swollen, bleeding and discharge pus.

How to prevent an ingrown toenail

Proper nail cutting technique is paramount when trying to avoid an ingrown toenail. Toenails should be trimmed relatively straight using multiple small cuts, rather than cutting the toenail with a single large cut. At Podiatry Group Melbourne we recommend avoiding cutting into the edge of the toenail as it increases your likelihood of developing an ingrown toenail. Although toenails are hard, they are quite malleable under constant pressure. This means that by wearing tight footwear you can bend and change the shape of your nail leading to an ingrown toenail.

Treating an ingrown toenail

At Podiatry Group Melbourne, how an ingrown toenail is treated will depend on its underlying cause, presentation of the toenail and the patient’s concerns and needs. Many ingrown toenails can be treated during a regular podiatry consultation whilst others may require an alternative treatment method or a small surgical procedure which can be provided in the consult rooms at Podiatry Group Melbourne clinics.

Onyfix pain-free ingrown toenail correction

Onyfix pain-free ingrown toenail correction is a German designed bracing system used at Podiatry Group Melbourne for the non-surgical correction of ingrown toenails. This is a painless walk-in walk-out procedure that can be performed during your podiatry consultation and is suitable for children. The hardened brace sits atop the nail plate (towards the base) and gently lifts the nail edges as the nail grows out. The brace may need to be reapplied every 6 to 8 weeks until there is complete resolution of symptoms.

Ingrown Toenail surgery

At Podiatry Group Melbourne we offer “walk-in walk-out” minimally invasive surgery to permanently resolve ingrown toenails. If an ingrown toenail is causing recurrent pain or localised infection (redness, swelling, discharge or pain) and conservative treatments have failed, toenail surgery may be indicated. Most commonly, ingrown toenail surgery involves the painless removal of a small section of offending nail under local anaesthetic. A chemical called phenol is commonly used to prevent regrowth of the small, removed section of nail. The surgical dressing is usually removed on day 2 when the patient can recommence their normal activities.

Ingrown toenail surgery cost: $400 + $50 per additional nail edge
